8.9 CADD Standards

Revised on 02-27-2025

PURPOSE

Uniform Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) standards improve the consistency of Bureau of Engineering (BOE) plans as well as establish consistency with national CAD standards. Adherence to the BOE CADD standards and the established CADD environment (layers, leveling, styles, details, line weights, line colors, etc.) improves the efficiency of our plan development process.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Project Manager (PM): The PM is responsible, normally through the efforts of the Project Engineer, for the completion of the design documents within the schedule and to the satisfaction of the client. The PM is also responsible for insuring that quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) procedures are followed and that the project remains within the approved budget and is consistent with the concept presented in the Pre-Design Report.

  • Project Engineer (PE): The PE will be responsible for the preparation, coordination, updating, and revision of the design and construction documents. The PE is required to follow the procedures outlined in this Chapter to protect public health, safety, welfare, and to ensure successful completion of the project. These procedures facilitate the production of accurate, consistent, complete, and understandable final plans and specifications, to be used to initiate and complete the construction of a project. The PE is responsible for coordinating the design documents with all of the design disciplines that have contributed to the project.

PROCEDURE

CADD Platforms

The BOE utilizes two major CADD platforms for the creation and editing of design plans (AutoCAD and MicroStation). Because of the historical development of CADD platforms, the Wastewater Program adopted MicroStation as the standard. AutoCAD is the standard platform in the majority of the other BOE programs and areas, with a few exceptions.

CADD Standards

The procedure for utilizing and following CADD standards in the Design Phase is clearly described in the reference documents. CADD standards are developed and maintained by the BOE CADD Standards Committee. Please refer to the CADD Standards located in the Technical Documents Center for the latest information regarding CADD standards. The BOE is moving towards adopting the National CAD Standard, but it’s not yet fully adopted.
